"We're not afraid to let
people know that we're
li
investing in the mission,"
he said. "These are dollars
set aside to cover overall
• events. They are not
• monies that come at the
expense of (Federation)
agencies."
Mr. Aronson said the
monies were taken from
endowment interest set
\ aside for emergency relief
/D efforts, like those last year
after Hurricane Andrew
struck South Dade County,
Fla., and Jewish agencies
that exceed their budgets.
However, at the discretion
of the Federation's board of
/ governors, the money can
be used for other reasons,
he said.
"The investment that the
Federation and Foundation
are making in the Mircle
Mission is for the purpose
of overall community moti-
vation and development,"
Mr. Aronson said. "Our
goal is heightened aware-
ness of Israel and involve-
ment in our local communi-
ty when the mission
returns."
Jewish Family Service
Executive Director Alan
Goodman is participating
in the Michigan Miracle
Mission. He agrees that the
UJF money is well-spent
and does not come at the
expense of agencies, like
> JFS.
"It comes from a differ-
ent pot of money," he said.
"(And) it gets people
involved who otherwise
would not be involved, both
through volunteer work
and financially. The more
involved our people are,
the stronger our communi-
ty will be." ❑

A police spokesman in Er-

whether the Nazi symbols
were included intentionally.
Printed materials with the
