Kresch says he
doesn't want much to
do with marriage...
not until he's 20, at least.
But last Sunday's model
wedding at Congregation
Beth Achim gave him
something to look forward
to: "Breaking the glass," he
said.
The ceremony was part
of an intercongregational
religious school activity
that included model sim-
chas: a wedding, brit and
baby naming.
Planners said the model
simchas provided students
from Congregations Beth
Achim, B'nai David and
Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses with the chance to
experience their religious-
school lessons firsthand.
"The event was an exam-
ple of experiential learn-
ing," said Rabbi Martin
Berman of Beth Achim.
"We hope that by demon-
strating what actually goes
on during a wedding or a
brit milah, the children
will have a better under-

standing of Jewish life and
the joys of traditional
observance."
Down the hall from the
sanctuary, where fifth-
grader Rachel Golumba
"married" sixth-grader
Jeremy Manson, students
gathered to witness the
brit of a plastic baby doll.
Aaron Wasserman, a sixth-
grade student from Beth
Achim, served as sandek
and held the doll in his lap,
while proud "father" Josh
Gruber looked on.

Stuart Friedman, the
cantor at B'nai David and a
certified mohel, explained
that the brit takes place on
the baby boy's eighth day
of life. Josh and Aaron
cringed at the sight of
Cantor Friedman's cutlery.

"I think most of us
enjoyed the activity," said
Eva Feuerstein, a teacher
at Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses. "It's important for
kids to have hands-on
experience instead of just
reading (about simchas) in
books." ❑
