The current work of
Baltimore artist Linda Bills
will be featured in a solo ex-
hibition at the Sybaris
Gallery through April 17.
Linda Bills' earliest works
were constructions made of
barks like tulip poplar, white
pine and cherry that often
alluded to packages,
garments and the human
figure. However, her latest
body of work is far removed
from her plaited bark forms of
a few years ago. Even though
some pieces still have open-
ings, she has expanded possi-
ble references into a purely
sculptural realm. Not only is
the scale of the work larger,
but it explores many more
abstract concepts.
One of the ideas Ms. Bills is
exploring within this work
has to do with a "sense of
place" and our relationship to
places. She likes the idea of
changeability in relation-
ships so she has created
multi-part pieces which can
be positioned in several dif-
ferent arrangements. Depen-
ding on how they are poised,
the pieces reveal previously
unseen or imagined surfaces,
spaces, openings, details or
overall forms beckoning the
viewer to examine them from
every point of view. The
message is about experienc-
ing and seeing things or peo-
ple in different ways.
Sybaris Gallery is at 301
West Fourth, Royal Oak.
Gallery hours are Tuesday-
Saturday 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
