orthville student
Matthew Brenner
recently won first
place in the America
& Me essay contest at Meads
Mill Middle School. His first
place essay now advances to
the state level competition.
Several thousand eighth-
grade students participate in
the contest.
This year's topic was
"Why I'm Important To
America." Matthew wrote
about his community service
project, where he vol-
unteered at Kids Club In
Higland Lakes, a program to
help young children. "I
helped the kindergarteners
through the fourth graders
on different projects. I really
learned about responsiblity
because the kids looked up to
me," said Matthew.
Matthew is the son of

Michael and the grandson
of Herb and Jean

New York Cookbook

NEW YORK COOKBOOK

Lots of nibbles and noshes
are featured in the recently
published New York
Cookbook by Molly O'Neil
(Workman Publishing,
$17.95). Ms. O'Neill used
thousand of New York
sources for her book. Not
only are there interesting
recipes but humorous vi-
gnettes about food. She
discussed the origin of the
phrase "Jewish penicillin,"
referring to chicken soup.
As for some of the Nosh
stops, the Second Avenue
Kosher Delicatessan and
Restaurant, Streits Matzoh
Factory and Moishe's
Kosher Bake Shop are men-
tioned. In the spirit of a
community cookbook, the
author donated a portion of
the royalties to the City
Meals-on-Wheels program.
