64th birthday took the cake
(sorry, I couldn't resist), as
the entire kibbutz celebrated
at a Friday night blow-out
bash. As much as I harbored
come criticisms of kibbutz
life, I couldn't help but ad-
mire the pride and excite-
ment shared by most of the
1,400 kibbutzniks, young
and old. We danced, ate,
drank and partied 'til the
early hours of the morning.
I suppose this was the
"warm, comfortable feeling
of home" that drew Tracie in
and induced her to stay
around.
It's impossible to judge kib-
butz life, specifically on Beit
Hashita, as good or bad.
Likewise, a person cannot
enter another society and
leave his/her instilled values
at the door. While I enjoyed
my stay at the kibbutz, I
could not forfeit my former
knowledge or opinions.
Rather, I absorbed the kib-
butz culture, and took with
me my own lessons. Hope-
fully, I gave a little of myself
and my world to the people I
interacted with. While I do
not see Kibbutz Beit Hashita
in my future, I feel fortunate
to take it with me as a mem-
ory of my past. ❑

Army Seals
Arab's Home

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
army has sealed shut the
home of two brothers accus-
ed of orchestrating the lyn-
ching of an Israeli when he
entered a Gaza Strip refugee
camp by mistake.
Yehoshua Weissbrod, 44, a
gas company worker, was
stoned and then shot to
death in the Rafah refugee
camp while on his way to a
gas terminal on the border
with Egypt. More than 100
residents of the refugee
camp were believed to have
taken part in the stoning,
believed to have inflicted
fatal injuries on Weissbrod
even before he was shot at
close range by armed
militants.
The army believes the
shots were fired by Yasir
Abu Samadana, leader of a
local Hawks gang, affiliated
with the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization's main-
stream Fatah section.
The curfew on Rafah
was continued.
