fulfilling, comfortable life.
However, after donating
three months to a kibbutz, I
eventually lost my idealistic
image to the more realistic
discovery that the kibbutz
movement is rapidly becom-
ing outdated in both theory
and practice. As an Ameri-
can living in the final decade
of the 20th century, I arrived
at the kibbutz with modern
values and knowledge. We
all did. However, we had to
trade these attitudes and
customs in exchange for styl-
ish prison-blue work clothes,
Hebrew notebooks that open
up backwards, and a way of
life that contradicted much
of what we knew and em-
braced back home. We soon
found more than the note-
books to be backwards, and
I think this — as well as in
the zeitiah — was where my
impression of Kibbutz Beit
Hashita took root.
We were told early on that
there is no formal definition
of a kibbutz, which put a ma-
jor flaw in my image of a
close-knit community where
everybody lives together,
loves one another and works
the land together. In fact,
Noah, a 27-year-old kib-
butznik itching to get away,
said without hesitation that
he "hates to share." He
yearns for the day he can
achieve his material dreams
without relying on the
monthly allowance of money
determined by the kibbutz.
This seems to be a new
trend among the younger
generation kibbutzniks.
Many have finished the
army, traveled the world and
thus been exposed to life out-
side the kibbutz bubble. The
kibbutz cannot compete with
the infinite career and social
possibilities found in the
nearby cities or in other
countries. The young kib-
butzniks on Beit Hashita are
eager to take the approxi-
mately $3,000 allotted to
them upon finishing the
army, and assert their fi-
nancial independence .. .
elsewhere.
Similarly, many adult
members of the kibbutz have
expressed interest in termi-
nating the existing system of
financial distribution, where-
by each working member of
the kibbutz receives a
monthly budget according to
family size and need, not ca-
reer. On the kibbutz, the
lowliest factory employee
