The tank is a white, plas-
tic, egg-like device, about 7-
feet long and filled with
1,100 pounds of Epsom salts
— which means you can even
fall asleep and not drown.
Visitors have the option of
watching a video or floating
in the total darkness and si-
lence.
The talkative, restless soul
might find the thought of be-
ing alone for an hour, com-
pletely deprived of sound and
light, a bit unnerving. But
the introspective guest is
likely to have a different ex-
perience. One devoted floater
describes it as "like being
back in the womb." Another
labeled it "comparable to
floating in space."
The flotation tank requires
the most participation — you
actually have to concentrate
on relaxing — so don't be dis-
appointed if your first float
is less than an epiphany. It
takes time to acquire the
skill.
"There is a curve for learn-
ing how to relax," Mr. Stutz
says. "It takes some open-
ness.
"At first, I thought the
tank was just okay. Now I
see it as a profound way to
get rid of any stress."
And it's a relaxation, he
says, that doesn't vanish
when the treatment is over.
