Washington (JTA) — A
group of B'nai B'rith leaders
has returned from a mission
to Austria glad to have had
the exposure to a range of
Austrian thinking on pre-
judice and anti- Semitism,
but still concerned about
how the Central European
country is dealing with the .
twin problems.
"Austria is sitting on the
edge of a volcano," said
Warren Eisenberg, director
of B'nai B'rith's Interna-
tional Council, who coor-
dinated the eight-day trip.
He noted Austria's loca-
tion, north of the war-torn
Balkan states and surround-
ed by countries facing na-
tionalist movements and
economic difficulties.
Austria, as a democracy,
Mr. Eisenberg said, sees
itself as playing a role in
helping its neighbors move
toward democracy, and this,
in turn, could lead Austria to
examine its own problems
with anti-Semitism and
refugee issues.
On the trip, the nine par-
ticipants, including politi-
cians and attorneys, found
that former Austrian Presi-
dent Kurt Waldheim, whose
Nazi past became- controver-
sial during his presidency,
was a constant topic of con-
versation.
Mr. Eisenberg said he felt
the controversy over Mr.
Waldheim's presidency
"stirred debate" in Austria
about the whole country's
relationship to Nazism, a
formerly taboo subject.
Austrians traditionally por-
trayed themselves as victims
of Nazism, Mr. Eisenberg
said, but the controversy
raised questions about that
portrayal.

Soviet Emigres
Stay in Germany

Bonn (JTA) — Most Jews
from the former Soviet
Union who immigrated to
Germany during the past
few years plan to stay here,
according to a poll taken by
the Moses Mendelssohn In-
stitute in Potsdam.
Although 90 percent of the
immigrants polled said they
were concerned about the re-
cent wave of right-wing ex-
tremism and neo- Nazi
violence in Germany, only
12.5 percent said they would
consider the possibility of
returning to their former
countries or moving to a
third country, including
Israel.
