tomers, we want them to
recognize us. I want to be
able to say to them,
`Thanks for watching; we
really appreciate it.' "
Cheryl Chodun: "I see
myself as a person in the
community who has an
important job that helps
people through their
days. Barbra Streisand is
a celebrity. Cheryl
Chodun is not. I am a
reporter and a visible per-
son."
"People are generally
wonderful when they
come up, very courteous
and almost apologetic
sometimes for coming up.
One of the best compli-
ments somebody could
give me is to walk up to
me and say 'I feel like
you're my friend because
I see you every night.' "
Mike Huckman: "I
never worked in a media
market that makes cele-
brities of its newspeople
as they do here. It has
taken some getting used
to because I've never been
recognized in a market as
I have in this market.
`The most calls and let-
ters I get are over the
hats I wear. I wish that
people would recognize
me more for my reporting
than for what I wear, but
that's just par for the
course, I think, when you
work in television. Our
appearance is part of it
whether we like it or not.
"I started wearing hats
for practical reasons
because it was so cold and
I work the night shift.
Then some of the fashion
writers picked up on it,
an it became more of a
fashion statement."
Don Shane: "I don't
think that we're celebri-
) ties in the same sense as
people who are on soap
operas or prime time tele-
vision or movies or any
thing like that. I'm terrifi-
cally happy that people
will come up to me. It
doesn't bother me at all.
It never has. When they
stop recognizing me,
that's when I'll feel I'm in
trouble because that's
when they're not watch-
) ing anymore."
Paul Gross: "When I
was working at Channel 6
in Lansing, where I was
on every weekend, I was
eating alone in a restau-

rant, and this middle-
aged woman recognized
me. She sat down at my
booth and just started
talking to me. She didn't
ask me; she just sat
down.
"It was at that point
that I realized that when
people turn on a newscast
and see you every day or
every weekend you
become a part of their
lives, and they feel they
know you. If the conver-
sation is brief, that's fine.
I like talking to people,
and I love sharing experi-
ences and answering
questions about what I
do. I enjoy any celebrity
status for one reason: It
enables me to do more
charity work." ❑
