Call 354.6060 Woman's Countdown To Passover Holiday ANN GOLDBERG SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS I here's nothing quite so alarming to the aver- age Jewish housewife as the word "Passover." It conjures up visions of sore hands, aching limbs, kitchen cupboards, dismembered cookers and all the other ac- companiments of Passover cleaning. The world seems to be divided into two kinds of peo- ple — those who go on spring- time trips the week before Passover, and the rest of us who just make it to the seder table with our sanity intact. Each year I promise myself it'll be different. I'll be more organized and less harassed. So last year I set off in search of expert advice. I discovered that the key to successful Passover prepara- tions is applying the same techniques to my housework as successful businesspeople do to their careers. The first basic time-management prin- ciple I learned is goal setting — knowing what you want to achieve and by when. Tests have shown that writing these goals down to remind yourself regularly is a proven help in actually achieving your aims. Fix a date for starting your preparations, bearing in mind your general commitments. Many people decide to start their Passover preparations right after Purim, four weeks before Passover. Others feel this is not enough time and start at least a couple of weeks earlier. Next, I make a collection of lists, starting from the gen eral to the most explicit. I g around the house and not what needs to be done in eac room and then I make a wee by-week list of what I hope achieve. This is also the time t assign tasks to other mem bers of the household, i.e._ yo children, especially regardin their bedrooms. My experi ence shows you have to b pretty definite about who needs to be done. If you say, "Clean out th closet" then they'll poke thei heads inside and say, "It' done." If you really want i done it pays to write dow "Remove all clothes from th shelves, wipe shelves dow and fold and replace every thing." Anything which doesn't ge done gets transferred to the next week's list. If I see th I am aiming too high, too fast, I can always revise the lists. A big psychological plus to list making is that you cross off every item that gets done and get a real feeling o achievement. Naturally, th more detailed the list, the more you can cross off. I try to start on the kitchen at least 10 days before Passover to give ample time for this most chametz-laden area of the house. If time running out and you haven' even started on the kitchen, decide what to eliminate from your list. Remember, the essence of Passover is getting rid of COUNTDOWN page 100
