A recovering heroin addict at a drug rehabilitation center just off Etzel Street said Mr. Asian even con- tributed to the center and paid for the party it was planning for former patients who had managed to stay clean. "He was a good man." "He was the best." "He had a good heart, he helped every- one." "I was heartsick over his death." That's how most people in Hatikva spoke after the funeral. There were other com- ments, though: "He was a dirty rag; a lot of people died because of him," said a high school senior arguing with the candy store employee about Mr. Asian's legacy. "Some people walk around here half-dead because of heroin, and he brought it in." Many locals, like the grill owner, refused to believe that Mr. Asian was a killer or a drug lord. Some thought this was a part of his past, but that he had "repented" the last 10-15 years and had entered "straight" busi- nesses and neighborhood philanthropy. Said the candy store worker: "The police knew he was a murderer but they couldn't catch him; he was too sophisticated. He was at the top of the heap, and not everybody can get there. He was a billionaire, the greatest, and I was a big fan." There's a sacred tradition in Israel to give exaggerated praise to someone who's just died. Not only fallen soldiers and terror victims, but murder victims and even those killed in traffic ac- cidents are written up in the press with glowing com- ments from friends and family. So it went with Yehezkel Asian, a folk hero in the Hatikva Quarter, a poor boy who'd made it big. Unless you learned his life story, or unless you asked around long enough to find those few dissenting voices, you'd never know he'd been a local menace, that for Hatikva, and for Israel, he had in fact been Public Enemy No. 1. North of q Mile in Southfield 356-6430 Jews Hail Mulroney As A Supporter Montreal (JTA) — Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, who announced his resignation, was hailed by Jewish groups as an ally and longtime supporter. Mr. Mulroney, in office since 1984, ended weeks of speculation and paved the way for a new leader to take over Conservative Party at a leadership convention in June and take the party into the next elections this fall. Polls taken within the last year showed Mr. Mulroney to have become the most un- popular prime minister ever. Canadian Jewish Congress wished Mulroney well in his future endeavors. "The CJC policy has and always will be to remain non-partisan," said CJC national president Irving Abella. "Nonetheless, as the na- tional representative body of the Jewish community, we recognize that (Mulroney) has demonstrated great per- sonal interest and sensitivi- ty to the domestic and inter- national concerns of the Jewish community of Canada. As well, we were very supportive of his singular commitment to na- tional unity." Mr. Mulroney failed last year to push through a ref- erendum that would have solidified unity among Eng- lish- and French-speaking Canadians. Mr. Abella pointed to several initiatives personal- ly begun by Mulroney that were helpful to Jewish in- terest. In February 1985, the government established the Deschenes Commission of Inquiry on War Criminals, which resulted in a law be- ing passed in September 1987 enabling the Justice Department to seek out and prosecute Nazi was criminals residing in Canada. Other initiatives, said Mr. Abella, were "the battle against racism and anti- Semitism. His longstanding friendship and understan- ding for Israel has been cI
