Perhaps this is why the key
historic moment recorded
right in the midst of the laws
of the Sanctuary's construc-
tion is the idolatry of the
Golden Calf, a prime example
of ritual going haywire, when
the end is forgotten and
replaced with the means.
To counter the potential
frenzy of ritual, it was
necessary for God to be very
precise as to how He wanted
to be worshipped in the Sanc-
tuary, this and no more, thus
preventing the fanaticism
which results from excess.
And thus the Torah must be
rigorously precise in what it
wants for Divine worship, and
must record the fact that
Moses and Aaron carried out
the Divine Plan.
We find the confluence of
these two elements, the laws
between human and God and
the laws between human be-
ings, in a fascinating
Halachah (law). The climax of
the service on Yom Kippur in
the Temple occurred when
the High Priest entered the
Holy of Holies and burned in-
cense, which was atonement
for the Israelites' sin of
slander (B.T., Arakhin 16 a).
The source is the biblical
record of the people slander-
ing Moses: God sends a
plague but Aaron ". . . ran in-
to the midst of the congrega-
tion, and beheld the plague
had begun among the people,
and he put on incense and
made atonement for the peo-
ple." (Numbers 17:12).
If we think about it, on the
holiest day of the year — Yom
Kippur — the holiest spot in
the world, the Sanctum Sane-
torum, is busy seeking for-
giveness for what X said
about Y. In effect we're being
taught that the ultimate pur-
pose of a ritual between God
and man is to purify the na-
tion from the ultimate sin
between man and man,
thereby bringing the nation
closer to a God of compas-
sionate goodness and
tolerance.
