Several years ago, the church and Temple Israel formed a part- nership, raising money for black scholarships. Both Hartford and Temple Israel are anxious to rebuild a rela- tionship — starting with the women's groups of both con- gregations hosting refresh- ments after the performance. Future plans include youth group meetings and social ac- tion projects. "I'm not sure why we split in the first place. I think it was more of a drift. But we're hop- ing this really takes off this time," said Linda Brodsky, Temple Israel president. The Rev. Diane Smalley Norman of Hartford Memorial Baptist expressed similar sentiments. "We're interested in open- ing a dialogue with the Jewish community," she said. She hopes the two groups can ad- dress issues such as anti- Semitism in the black community, while improving the spiritual lives of both con- gregations. David Gad-Harf, executive director of the JCCouncil, added, "The proviso by Hartford that this not be a one-time-only experience is wonderful. The process is as important as the perfor- mance." Both Temple Israel and Hartford Memorial Baptist will bring members of their youth groups to the perfor- mances. The American Jewish Committee hopes to gather a group of singles for the play, as does Hartford. "From the moment Adele suggested this, I thought it was a tremendous idea from someone with a vision — a daring to discuss the friction between two old friends," said Mike Wimberley, a staff writ- er for The Michigan Chronicle. "I think it's appro- priate for us to sponsor such performances. These events are in the media. Whether we report on Crown Heights or our neighbors in Southfield or Detroit, we're already in- volved." The two papers plan to ex- change opinion and editorial columns in future editions. "Being a media outlet, we're dealing with creative people. With the proper vision, our op- portunities are endless," Mr. Wimberley said. Arthur Horwitz, associate publisher of The Jewish News, agreed. "There needs to be many more opportunities where the black and Jewish communi- ties can interact and learn from each other," Mr. Horwitz said. "Since we see our role as expanding the knowledge of our readers, it is both logical and important that we, The Jewish News, play an active role in exposing the Jewish community to its neighbors — both inside and outside the Jewish community." "By working with The Michigan Chronicle, there are many opportunities to provide a perspective to our readers that they might not normally get and vice versa," Mr. Horwitz said. "There are top- ical issues that beg for addi- tional perspectives. By working together, we can open some ideas and some minds that might remain closed."
