Jenkins knows songs, chant

ment at her concerts.

Temptations, all of them —
Diana Ross too. Diana Ross
once asked me if she could
play my violin. Then I saw
she had finger nails this
long. And I said 'no."
"They were a fun-loving
group. It was a different
scene altogether, but it was
fun. And it's amazing now
to see how important
Motown music is around
the world...it's too bad it
left Detroit."
Mr. Resnick's mother, a
self-taught violinist, intro-
duced him to the instru-
ment. He began formal
training as an 8 year old.
By age 11 he was taking

Mr. Resnick doesn't sei
retirement in the nee;
future. But after more tha`
50 years, he can't help fee
ing a little nostalgic. "It h

a great city for music,

that performed at the
Detroit Institute of Arts.
In 1959, he became the
conductor of the Grosse
Pointe Symphony. Sixteen
years later he helped form
the West Bloomfield
Symphony, now known as
the Birmingham-Bloomfield
Symphony. He remains the
principal conductor of both
ensembles.
His role models include
Neeme Jarvi, the DSO's
current conductor, and Paul
Paray, who led the orches-
tra between 1952 and 1963.
"Paul Paray made the
biggest impression, no
doubt. He was a great musi-
cian, and I was already get-
ting interested in conduct-
ing myself so I really
learned a lot from him.
"Neeme Jarvi has also
done a wonderful job of win-
ning over the orchestra and
the audience. It's genuine.
The orchestra loves to play
for him. There are many
conductors who do well
with music. But there are
not too many who so obvi-
ously enjoy every minute of
what they're doing. This
absolutely shows every time
he works. He has a warmth
that he communicates to
the audience."
Despite his own conduct-
ing prowess, Felix Resnick
has made his greatest mark
on Detroit's music scene as
a versatile violinist. With
half a century under his
DSO belt, he is the ensem-
ble's longest tenured musi-
cian and he holds the assis-
tant principal chair in the
second section.
An avid jazz enthusiast,
Mr. Resnick also enjoys

playing and conducting
from the repertoire of light
classics and pops. His var-
ied musical experiences
include live radio and tele-
vision performances and a
prominent role recording
for Motown records as a
member of the Hitsville
string section.
He says many of the six-
hour Motown recording ses-
sions began at midnight,
after symphony perfor-
mances. Although the job
required stamina, Mr.
Resnick has fond memories
of his work at the Grand
Boulevard studios.

were all there. Smokey
