The same goes for at-
tempting to squelch dis-
agreements about these and
other vital religious, political,
social or psychological issues
in the community. The em-
phasis is on keeping them out
of the local Jewish newspa-
per and under the table. But
this is a mistake: Promoting
an artificial sense of commu-
nal unity at the expense of
open discussion and intellec-
tual exchange is a sure way
to deaden the landscape of
Jewish activity.

Crash Survivors
Cope With Tragedy

ne and a half months
after a Florida high-
way accident killed
two of their family
members, Adam Shpol-
yansky, 4, and his grand-
mother, Reva, of Southfield
are trying to come to terms
with their loss.
"Adam is playing, but
when his grandmother
cries and laments in
Russian, he freezes up,"
said a family friend, who
asked not to be identified.
"He says that his mother
and sister are in the hospi-
tal, but they're not coming
back."
Adam's sister and moth-
er, Anna and Elina
Shpolyansky, died during
their winter vacation in
Florida. Their friends,
Semyon and Antik
Kushelman, also died in
the accident.
Both families came to
America from Russia —
the Kushelmans in 1979;
the Shpolyanskys three
years ago.

Adam and his grand-
mother have no other rela-
tives in the United States.
They are surviving on
Supplemental Security
Income and funds from the
Department of Social
Services. About $700 was
raised through private
donations to the Resettle-
ment Service, according to
Sandra Hyman, director.
