ber must be ready to
administer first aid to an
injured skier and get him
down the hill for more
treatment.
Tibor Kiss, a Ski
Patrol director at Alpine
Valley in the early
1980s, has worked with
Paul for many years.
Kiss said Paul has the
perfect disposition for
Ski Patrol work.
"You need to be a vol-
unteer nut to be in the
Ski Patrol, and Larry is
just that," said Kiss.
"You also have to enjoy
working with the public
and you must be calm in
an emergency.
"Larry is very calm,"
Kiss said. "You can't
aggravate an injury situ-
ation by panicking.
"I remember about
three years ago, a kid
was hurt and we called
his mother, wha yelled at
her son. Well, Larry read
this lady the riot act. He
told her in no uncertain
terms not to shake up
her son anymore."
Kiss said Paul is a
good guy to have around
off the slopes, too.
"If you need some-
thing... advice, support,
compassion...you name
it, Larry will do every-
thing in his power to
help you," Kiss said.
"Whether you're a very
good friend or a casual
acquaintance, he'll do
what he can."
You could call Paul a
Pied Piper of skiing. He

introduced his first wif
Phyllis, and their thre
children to the sport du
ing the 1950s. Now he'
doing the same thin
with his second wif
Martha, and her chi
dren. His 10 grandchil
dren and step-grandchi]
dren are getting infecte
with the bug, too.
Paul and Phyllis wer
married for 40 year
until her death in 1989
He's been married t
Martha for seven years.

One of Paul's daugh
ters, Suzie Bouche, 39
who now lives in Sar
Diego, was a state
ranked skier at South
field High School wh.,
went on to become one 0,
the top grass skiers ir,
the world.

Another daughter
Karen Jacobson, 44, i.
the system-wide depart!
ment head for health and
vocational education for
Birmingham Schools.
Karen became a Basic
Ski Patrolwoman at Pine
Knob during her senior
year at Southfield High.
Her experience intro-
duced her dad to the
patrol.

Thankfully, Ski Patrol
members at Alpine
Valley have become less,
busy in recent years.
Larry Paul says in the
past decade the number
of accidents have de-
clined "from 800 to 900 a
season to half that. ❑
