Meier Sheetrit
Withdraws
Jerusalem (JTA) — Knesset
member Meir Sheetrit, a
former treasurer of the Jew-
ish Agency, has withdrawn
his candidacy to lead the
Likud bloc and announced
he will pull out of the
primaries scheduled for next
month.
The race for the Likud
leadership has now been
narrowed to four contenders:
former Deputy Foreign Min-
ister Benjamin Netanyahu,
Knesset member Ze'ev
"Benny" Begin, former For-
eign Minister David Levy
and Moshe Katsav, who has
held various Cabinet port-
folios.
Mr. Sheetrit, whom polit-
ical observers never gave
much of a chance for winn-
ing the primaries, said an il-
lness in his family had forc-
ed him to end his campaign.
In a letter to his campaign
volunteer staffers, Mr.
Sheetrit thanked them
warmly for their support. He
did not endorse any of the
four remaining candidates.
Likud officials said the
party coffers were running
dry and that the primary
elections might have to be
postponed unless the can-
didates themselves could
raise some more funds to
help pay for it.
Mr. Netanyahu and Mr.
Levy are considered the
front-runners, with Begin,
whose father was the late
Prime Minister Menachem
Begin, showing signs of
gaining.
Some observers reckon
that Mr. Begin's chances
have improved in the fallout
of "Bibigate," the still-
unresolved scandal in which
Netanyahu accused Likud
rivals of trying to blackmail
him into withdrawing from
the primary by threatening
to reveal the extramarital
affair that he was having.
