Ms. Caplan's composing
uses advanced computer
equipment, which she
keeps in her studio along
with the grand piano
given to her on her 50th
birthday by her husband,
David.
"All of my piano work is
keyed into the computer
and played out through
synthesizers," Ms. Caplan
explained. "I can then
play everything I want
with a full orchestra and
have all the sheet music
printed through the com-
puter."
The equipment also
allows her to record and
play back any segment of
the music.
To learn traditional
composing skills and the
new technology at her fin-
gertips, Ms. Caplan
attended the University
of Michigan, Wayne State
University and Oakland
University. Instead of
working toward a degree,
she audited only those
classes she personally
believed would be helpful
in achieving her goals.
"When I went back to
school because I wanted
to grow further, I started
with the music, and the
music led to the history of
music and, from there,
the study of jazz and con-
temporary styles," she
said.
"That's when I started
writing lyrics and realiz-
ing that the lyrics were
what I really believed in
and what had been
taught to me. I'm almost
more thrilled to have the
music come at this age
because I appreciate it so
much more.
"Now I will sit and com-

pose in my studio, and it's'
nothing to sit there six or
eight hours a day."
Although Ms. Caplan
took piano lessons as a
youngster, she stayed
away from it for 20 years.
When she resumed her
interest, her grown chil-
dren were surprised to
learn she had this ability.
"I feel so fortunate," she
said. "When others were
having the empty-nest
syndrome, I figured it was
my turn to move ahead.

"I'm almost more
thrilled to have
the music come at
this age because I
appreciate it so
much more."

My age group had chil-
dren when we were young
so we get to have a little
bit of extra time at the
end.
"The generation after us
is having children later so
they get the time first."
After the JET presenta-
tion, which came about
through friends who had
previewed her work and
recommended the staged
reading, Ms. Caplan will
use audience comments to
complete final revisions.
Then she will try to market
the review to regional the-
ater companies around the
country.
"I think the image of
senior citizens needs revis-
ing," said the mother of two
and grandmother of four.
"We like who we are.
There's a lot of us at this
age, and there's not much
made for our age group." ❑
