ast week's snowstorm
didn't interfere with
more than 70 people
who came to hear
celebrity Marto Thomas
speak at a Haven fund-raiser
at the home of SuSu
Sosnick. Mrs. Sosnick is a
longtime supporter of the
Haven, an Oakland County
shelter for abused women
and children. "It's my
pleasure to host this event,"
Mrs. Sosnick said.
Haven volunteers Kathy
Wilson Fink and Merrily
Tann planned the event in
just two weeks by making
phone calls and networking
without formal invitations.
Ms. Fink introduced social
activist Marto Thomas, who
is now appearing at the
George Burns Theatre in the
play Six Degrees of Separa-

tion.

"I sometimes feel I'm like
a road company for Mother
Theresa," said Ms. Thomas,
who supports women's
causes. Ms. Thomas also
mentioned that she was born
in Grace Hospital in Detroit
and still has family in town.
She graciously acknowl-
edged the hard work all the
local women are doing for
the Haven.
Hedy Nuriel, the new ex-
ecutive director of the
Haven, spoke briefly on the
need for support because of
the existing problem of do-
mestic violence. Ms. Nuriel
has worked with this cause
for more than 12 years and

was previously with the
Michigan Coaltion Against
Domestic Violence. On a
different note, her son Gali
is in Israel with Project
Discovery.
Some of the Haven sup-
porters. include: Sydell
Schubot, Laura Munder,
Jeanne Dubin, Lois
Shaevsky, Betty Jean
Rivkin, Meryl Podolsky,
Judy Verona, Rhonda
Verona, Linda Hayman,
Diane Orley, Sue Orley,
Penny Blumenstein and
Nancy Grosfeld.
