C
ordoba, Spain, lovely
white-washed city two
hours from Seville, was
once the intellectual,
cultural and artistic center of
Moorish Spain. Muslim,
Christian and Jewish com-
munities thrived here, leav-
ing monuments testifying to
the glories of their. civiliza-
tions. The three principal
sites to visit — the Mezquita
(Mosque), the Synagogue and
the Viana Palace — are
located in the Old Quarter
and can easily be seen in one
and one-half days.
The Mezquita is Cordoba's
landmark. This edifice was
built by the Moors in 785 C.E.
on the site of a Visigothic
cathedral and was enlarged
in 987 C.E. by Caliph Al Man-
sur. The thick outer walls are
decorated with horseshoe
arlaes, intricate stucco work
and doors embellished with
Moorish designs. The Door of
Forgiveness leads to the
Court of the Oranges, an •
enclosed sunny patio filled
with sweet smelling orange
trees. Entering the mosque,
visitors are struck by the hun-
dreds of double-tiered red and
white striped horseshoe ar-
ches leading in every direc-
tion. This is the only mosque
in the world to feature such a
labyrinth of colorful columns
and arches.
Although the arches are un-
forgettable, the greatest jewel
of the mosque lies on the
eastern wall. There, the
mihrab, or holy niche, has an
ornate facade decorated with
jewel-toned mosaics. Each of
the three niches, ribbed
domes and cupolas is covered
with glittering tiles. The in-
ner room, where holy relics
were kept, is especially
beautiful with its blue, gold
and silver arabesque motifs.
Turning from the mihrab,
the tourist is offered another
surprise — a huge Christian
cathedral rises out of the mos-
que's center! A few centuries
