practicing with one of his
teams, he often goes to the
Maple/Drake Jewish
Community Center to
play.
He's also played on two
Detroit Maccabi teams.
His 1990 team was a quar-
ter finalist during the
North American Games
here in Detroit. He also
played for the gold medal-
winning 1991 team at the
regional games in
Cleveland. This summer,
Marks hopes he'll get a
chance to try out for the
U.S. team for the World
Maccabi Games in Israel.
Although Marks faces
his toughest competition
during the summer sea-
son, the West Bloomfield
team has been an impor-
tant part of his life.
"I've been lucky," Marks
says. "When I was a
sophomore coming up
here, I had a great bunch
of guys around me, like
Josh Koby, who signed
with Eastern Michigan.
Just good, solid basketball
players.
"So I've been lucky to
have good coaches and
good people around me."
Marks says he'll miss
the high school "cama-
raderie and joking around
with your friends," when
his senior season ends in
March. "We're really close
to Coach Domke," he adds.
"We go over his house on
weekends, watch basket-
ball games. We've had a
lot of success...I know I'll
miss it. But, fortunately, I
might have a chance to
play after high school. So I
have a lot to look forward
to."

Indeed, Marks had early
scholarship offers from
several colleges last fall.
But he wasn't satisfied
with his choices, so he'll
wait until the next signing
period, in April, to choose
his school.
Coach Domke feels that
Marks is Division I mater-
ial. "He'd be an asset to
any team," Domke says,
but he notes that the
NCAA's recent ruling,
which allows colleges one
less basketball scholar-
ship than before, may hurt
Marks' chances of landing
a Division I scholarship.
"A lot of people get -/
caught up in , 'If you don't
play at the big school, if
you're not playing at
Michigan, Michigan State,
you're not good,' " he says.
"But there are a lot of
players who come out of
colleges, great play-
ers."
Coach Domke feels
Marks will benefit from
being in a year-round pro-
gram which includes a
physical fitness regimen.
"His best years are in
front of him," Domke says.
For now, Marks has
only two goals: winning
another MSAA title, which
won't be easy, and leading
West Bloomfield to a suc-
cessful run in the state
tournament.
"I want to win this
league, that's the most
important goal. We're a
good team, we've got some
good players, good ath-
letes. The last two years
we've gone to the regional
finals and lost both years.
I'd like to get past that." ❑
