But more than two years later, Mrs. Servetter says she could handle it. "I've grown up, so to speak, too. I would like to meet Sarah someday to say thank you. I thank this woman from -thank the bottom of my heart. I don't think I ever, ever could do what she did. I ;thank her every day of Cheryl's life that she agave her up so we could have her." Ms. Servetter's search didn't end with her birth mother. She has since met and forged a rela- tionship with her birth father, Ronnie Kriegel, who welcomed her with enthusiastically open arms. ) Her parents describe a more happy and content woman, but Mrs. Krystal says Ms. Servetter's evo- lution is far from over. "Cheryl isn't done with this process." What Ms. Servetter found is that the ques- tion "Who am I?" doesn't really end with a reunion. It opened up new feelings. New boundaries had to be defined, new pathways forged, new relationship patterns developed. "I guess this is part of the post-reunion stuff. The whole time I was there (visiting Sarah) I kept thinking, 'Where do I fit in? Do I belong here? I wonder how everyone / -feels about me, how I feel about everyone?' Then I realized that I'm going to be part of this family for- ever; I can't change it now. It would be impos- sible." Mrs. Krystal agrees that it was important for Ms. Servetter to bring the search to its conclu- sion. "I think it was very - helpful for Cheryl to find this person. I think this person answered a lot of questions about herself. And I feel now she knows she has a past and it's a - good past: 'Here's some- one I look like. Now I can go on. I know who I am.'" 0 29
