Do You Know
Mitzvah People
In Our Midst?
"That man deserves the highest honors who does
not ask for them, but performs worthy deeds."
Josh Zwickl
"He stands out. Josh was already
doing the kind of thing we were
trying to teach to the kids. I think
there really are people in this
world who direct their energy in
this way, and when you meet
one, you recognize it im-
mediately."

From Chuck Pearlstein, a 30-year-old who inspires people more than
twice his age with a range of good deeds, to Bessie Chase, a pint-
sized, 80-year-old dynamo of energy intimately involved with more
than a dozen charitable causes . . . From Rae Ann Sharfman, who
has been at the forefront of the Soviet emigration movement to
11-year-old Josh Zwickl, whose drive and compassion benefit many
causes, particularly the Yad Ezra kosher food pantry, Jews have been
performing significant acts of charity and kindness with little or no
fanfare.
To honor those Jews in our midst who, through unusual or extraor-
dinary acts of personal charity and kindness, touch the lives of Jews
and others in the Detroit area, and in the hopes of having their ac-
tions inspire others in our community to perform similar acts, The
Jewish News will publish its fifth annual Mitzvah Heroes special
section.
We invite you to nominate a person or persons you may know for
this special honor. A panel of distinguished judges will select the
honorees, whose work will be featured in the special section.
Please fill out the form below, clip it, and return it with a description
of the acts of charity and kindness performed by the nominee. All
nominations must be received by Friday, February 26, 1993.
"Happy is the man whose deeds are greater than his learning."
