SY MANELLO SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
/-
/—
he Rumanian gov-
ernment offered to
ease up on Jews
and to release some
of them if the Allies
would treat the
Rumanians with leniency
in postwar settlements.
A New York Times corre-
spondent stated that it
was not known if the pro-
posals were in good faith
but they did seem to rep-
resent an effort to im-
prove Rumania's stand-
ing with the Allies to
ease the amount of retri-
bution feared to be forth-
coming from the victors.
Members of the British
House of Commons urged
Britain to set an example
for other countries with
regard to aid for Jewish
refugees; this plea was
precipitated by the Home
Secretary's statement on
the continued restric-
tions on admitting
Jewish refugees into
Great Britain.
Seemingly in anticipa-
tion of a demand to be
made for reparations for
Jewish property confis-
cated by Nazis in
Germany, the German
Ministry of Propaganda
issued a report estimat-
ing that property confis-
cated so far was worth
"no more than four bil-
lion marks". the Swedish
press, publishing
'
this
report, estimated that
the actual value was four
times that amount.
The atrocities in
Poland continued with
the report that the entire
Jewish population of the
city of Otwock, some
3,200, was murdered in
one night. The World
Jewish Congress received
word that in at least one
place in Poland 6,000
Jews were killed daily.
The news of 20 years
earlier was somewhat
less depressing. At that
time, a young Jew from
Edmunton in Canada
became a chief adviser to
Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who
was seeking to regain his
position as head of the
government in South
China. The Jewish sec-
tions of the Communist
Party in Moscow were
authorized to distribute
a supply of matzot for
Passover and the ADC
was given permission to
distribute money to Jews
who did not have funds
to purchase matzot.
Throughout the Det-
roit area, the focus was
on Brotherhood Week.
Three editorials were
featured, written by
Edgar A. Guest, M.
Hubert O'Brien and
Henry Wineman, the
Protestant, Catholic and
Jewish co-chairmen
respectively of the
Detroit Round Table.
Harold Noveg, president
of the League of Detroit
Jewish Youth, served as
moderator at a brother-
hood panel sponsored by
the National Council of
Jewish Juniors. Rose
Cooper was featured
soloist at a musicale at
the JCC devoted to the
music of composers of
various faiths.
As much as we think
things change, we should
realize how much they
stay the same. Take, for
example, these two
items from 50 years ago.
The Council of Orthodox
Rabbis issued a state-
ment of need for a
kosher restaurant in
Detroit; the Vaad was
planning a meeting to
lay the groundwork for
such an eatery. The
Vaad Hayeshivoth of
Detroit warned the
Jewish public to look for
the date on the creden-
tials of meshulochim
(accredited representa-
tives) since some solici-
tors were not authorized
by its office.
The milestones noted
in the community were
numerous. Among those
born at this time were
Gloria Parzen, Judith
Katz, Peter Tucker.
Engaged to be married
were Babette Lichten-
stein and Louis Rosen;
Evelyn Shapiro and Nat
Edelberg.
As always, there were
bargains for the serious
shoppers. Brothers was
offering custom made
shirts for $2.50 and up;
Sam's Cut Rate had 5
quart enameled tea ket-
tles for 98 cents. ❑

Chiropractic Health Hints
WITH DR. STANLEY LEVINE, D.C.
DISC DISEASE
The spinal discs are cartilage pads which sit between the
vertebra and provide most of the flexibility to the spine. Without
the discs, the spine would be a rigid column of bone not capable
of bending.
The mobility that the spinal discs add to the spinal column
is, however, not without some drawbacks. By being soft and
therefore flexible, the spinal discs are prone to "wear" with time
and aging.
Researchers from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at
Dr. Levine George Washington University found abnormal discs on CAT
scans in 35% of all age groups.
A slipped or herniated disc is perhaps the most common reason for which people
have back surgery. Fortunately, other treatment alternatives such as chiropractic
manipulation are available for the treatment of disc disorders. Two recent studies com-
paring manipulation to other non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy found
manipulation to be superior in treating back pain related to the disc. Many patients
receiving this type of treatment will be able to avoid difficult back surgery.
Anyone with back or leg pain should have a chiropractic evaluation for a disc
disorder. Many will find that chiropractic treatment will be the answer to this difficult
and common problem.
