ob Is Suspended
or Holocaust Denier

In his about-face a few
hours after his latest
suspension was made public,
he told Agence France
Presse, "I do not doubt at all
the reality of the Jewish
genocide and of the gas
chambers."
But, he said, "I do con-
demn the extensive media
attention to the genocide,
leading to its becoming
banal, and I criticize the in-
decent and permanent show-
ing of the horrible though
sometimes dubious
methods."
He asked "those who may
have been hurt by my
writings to forgive me."
But in order to prevent any
further clashes, Mr. Notin's
superiors canceled his lec-
ture. Mr. Notin provoked a
scandal in 1989 when it was
discovered that he had
published, in a journal of the
French National Center for
Scientific Research, a text
denying the gas chambers'
existence.
As punishment, he was
suspended from teaching for
three years but was to
resume his lectures last
month.
Mr. Notin was unavailable
for comment.

His body was found by a
soldier and police deter-
mined he had frozen to death
about a day earlier.
According to a report in
Ma'ariv, Mr. Gelbob told
Israeli immigration officials
that during his Soviet army
service he worked in com-
puter planning at an army
installation where Scud mis-
siles were built.
After his army service, Mr.
Gelbob was a computer
systems planner in Soviet
space centers and was
regarded as one of the coun-
try's experts in air condi-
tioning for space vehicles.
Mr. Gelbob persuaded his
wife, Raiza, a mathemati-
cian, to immigrate with him
to Israel because of the poor
economic outlook in the
former Soviet Union.
Mr. Gelbob had been work-
ing toward a doctorate in
electronic engineering at the
time and hoped to establish
a better life in Israel.

Unemployed Oleh
Freezes To Death

I el Aviv (JTA) — A man
f ound frozen to death last
Feek in an abandoned
'warehouse in Rehovot has
en identified as a senior
ngineer in the former
Soviet Union's space pro-
am who immigrated to
[srael two years ago.
The man, Viacheslav
G-elbob, 32, had been unable
to find work in his field once
e came to Israel and was
forced to accept odd jobs in
the construction industry.
The tragic story, widely
covered in the Israeli media,
is seen as illustrating the
plight of immigrants from
the former Soviet Union.
Many of them are highly
skilled but cannot find work,
particularly in their
previous field of expertise.
Mr. Gelbob apparently had
taken to wandering about
aimlessly, carrying a bag
containing a few belongings
and sleeping in strange loca-
tions.
