remarks on the rights of
homosexuals. Hanan Porat,
a fiery member of the Na-
tional Religious Party,
called
out, "What? Where
.
7- did you get that?" Then Ms.
Dayan went down the list of
great homosexuals in histo-
ry, from Allen Ginsberg to
\ Michelangelo to Augustus
• Caesar. "Since when are you
such an expert?" Rabbi
> Porat demanded.
"I'll conclude with a
passage from Samuel II,"
Ms. Dayan said, and she
began reading from David's
lament over Jonathan's
death in battle. "Don't do it!
> Don't do it!" Rabbi Porat
shouted. She read: "I am sad
for you, Jonathan my
brother; you were very
pleasant to me; your love
was more wonderful to me
than the love of women."
), By the time Ms. Dayan fin-
ished the passage, every
Knesset member wearing a
kippah, including one from
the Labor Party, was
) shouting at her. A few from
the secular ranks jumped to
her side.
"My interpretation is as
valid as yours," she said
over the din. The Orthodox
Shas party threatened to
quit the coalition and bring
\ down the government if Ms.
Dayan was not brought into
line. At a meeting of Labor
HParty leaders, she was the
/ main topic of conversation.
Finally, she apologized for
the David and Jonathan
row.
"I regret the David and
Jonathan thing," she said in
her apartment. "If it had oc-
curred to me that people
would have been so offended,
I never would have quoted
the passage in a million
years."
That is all the apology she
is ready to make. For the
rest, she is just doing what
she believes in, and if it
upsets people, even in her
own party, she says, "I'm not
there to satisfy or please
them."
She is on the outs with
Prime Minister Rabin, and
belongs to a group of promi-
nent Labor doves who are
trying to push the party
leftward. They are Mr.
Rabin's internal opposition,
are loosely led by Foreign
/ Minister Shimon Peres, and
have more allegiance among
the party's grassroots than
does the prime minister, as
shown by the election of par-
ty Secretary General Nissim
Zvili and the Labor presi-
dential nomination of Ezer
Weizmann — both doves,
both supported by Mr. Peres,
neither of them supported by
Mr. Rabin. ❑
