from that?' "
Miss Levine has been a
volunteer with the South-
field schools, where she
taught English to foreign
students. She is a member
of Hadassah and ORT, is ac-
tive in a Yiddish club, and is
on the advisory board of the
Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE
GROWING UP IN
THE OLD JEWISH
NEIGHBORHOODS?

"First we lived in the
Hastings Street area. It was
the Jewish neighborhood
back then. Who knew from
telephones? Every time you
went outside you saw mish-
pachah.
"Later, we lived at Dexter
and Cortland. You would go
out on Saturday afternoon
and you couldn't walk for all
the young mothers with
their baby carriages.
"On Shabbat, we always
had members of the shul
over to our house. My moth-
er did all the cooking and
baking; her gefilte fish and
challah were delicious. She
made her own wine, too. All
the women did. That was in
the days before Manische-
witz. My father used to help
her.
"At Passover, my father
led the seder. I used to sit
right beside him. Everybody
—aunts and uncles, cousins
—came to our home for the
seder and for yom toy din-
ners.
"My family was very close
with Rabbi (Leon) Fram
(founding rabbi of Temple
Israel). He was friends with
(my brother and sister-in-
law) Reuben and Goldie.
When my father died, Rab-
bi Fram was out of town, but
he came back to attend my
father's funeral.
"Life was different back
then. We worked very hard.
For entertainment, we had
the radio. But mostly we vis-
ited and had family discus-
sions.
"People didn't have as
much financially, but there
was a different feeling. You
didn't have the stress you
have today. Everybody was
happy with what he had." ❑

The business of the
philosopher is well done if he
succeeds in raising genuine
doubts.
