Levine And Cracow
Orchestra Here Feb. 2

The Cracow Philharmonic
Orchestra of Poland, under
the direction of American
conductor Gilbert Levine, will
appear in Detroit's Orchestra
Hall 8 p.m. Feb. 26 as part of
a nine-city tour of North
America.
This will help the orchestra
rebuild its concert hall,
destroyed by fire last year
along with its entire music
library. The orchestra will
visit Cleveland, Chicago, Buf-
falo, Toronto, Detroit, Phila-
delphia, Boston, Washington,
D.C., and New York.
The United Jewish Appeal
is coordinating the promotion
and Jewish support for their
appearances throughout the
country.
Five years ago, the Cracow
Philharmonic Orchestra be-
came the first cultural in-
stitution in Eastern Europe
to appoint an American as its
head. New York-born Gilbert
Levine is Jewish. His family
left Warsaw a century ago
and his mother-in-law was a
survivor of Auschwitz.
Mr. Levine has led many of
the world's leading orches-
tras, among them the New
York Philharmonic, the Phil-

adelphia Orchestra, Dresden
Staatskapelle, RSO Berlin,
Royal Philharmonic, English
Chamber Orchestra, etc., and
has also appeared at the ma-
jor international festivals.
On Oct. 24, 1990, under the
sponsorship of the United
Jewish Appeal, Mr. Levine
conducted a historic "Concert
of Remembrance and Recon-
ciliation" in the Temple
Postepowa in Cracow, at
which its Star of David, torn
down by the Gestapo, was
reconsecrated.
The concert in the 100-year-
old synagogue, unused since
World War II, drew Jews from
around the world, along with
emissaries from the Vatican
and representatives of the
Polish government, who
joined with prominent Cath-
olic religious leaders in rais-
ing the Star of David on top
of the synagogue.
Appearing as soloist in the
orchestra's Detroit concert
will be Canadian pianist
Janina Fialkowska.
The program includes the
first Detroit performance of
Three Pieces in Old Style by
contemporary Polish com-
poser Henryk Gorecki.

WSU Press Publishes
Yiddish Poetry Book

A publication by Wayne State
University Press, With Teeth
in the Earth: Selected Poems
of Malka Heifetz Tussman,
has been chosen by the Jew-
ish Book Club to be a featured
selection in their February
catalogue. The book, edited
and translated from Yiddish
by Marcia Falk, is made up of
poems from Malka Tussman's
six books of verse and from a
last unpublished manuscript.
Ms. Tussman's poetry is
frank and exploratory and
reveals the richness and com-
plexity of a woman's life. Ms.
Tussman was the recipient of
the Manger Prize for Yiddish
Letters. With Teeth in the
Earth is the first full-length
collection in English of her
poetry.
Born in the Ukraine in
1896, Ms. Tussman immi-
grated to the United States at
the age of 16. At the urging
of a mentor, she began to
write her poems exclusively
in Yiddish, experimenting
with the language to create a
unique and inventive voice.

Malka Heifetz Tussman died
in California in 1987 at the
age of 91.
Translator Marcia Falk
prepared notes and a
translator's introduction for
the book to offer another win-
dow into the poet's life and
art.
With Teeth in the Earth can
be ordered through book-
stores or directly from Wayne
State University Press.
