He explains that his government-owned Soviet barber shop was lackluster in work incentives. With a smile, he admits that the tedium was occasionally broken by those offering bribes to avoid waiting hours in line. ) Endless lines, scanty food supplies and restrained ex- pression all mark Mr. Vinit- sky's memories of the Soviet Union. He says, "I think that people in the West take their freedom for granted. To be able to express myself profes- sionally and to be able to openly admit my religion, are my first tastes of freedom." "In the Soviet Union, I even used to work on Yom Kippur," Mr. Vinitsky recalls. "Before Gorbachev it would have been dangerous to show any sen- timental feeling toward Judaism." Yacob, who arrived in Israel last year with his parents and three younger brothers, has opted for learning a trade before beginning his com- pulsory army service. Mustachioed and with swarthy good looks, Mr. Yacob says that his family's absorp- tion has gone surprisingly smoothly. Both of his parents are employed in factories and 7 the family plans on buying a small apartment in Ramla. He says, "For me, the only hard part was leaving behind friends in the Soviet Union." Hopefully, employment op- portunities will help ease the void left by friends. Both Mr. Vinitsky and Mr. Yacob may have grasped some of the elementaries of capitalism when they guessed that hairstyling could offer stable incomes. As hairdressing in- spector Ya'acov Ben Yehuda points out, "Hundreds of thousands of new immigrants mean hundreds of thousands of more heads that need hair- In three exciting sessions, the Successful Money Management Seminar introduces you to the key concepts and practices of wise money manage- ment.
