Tensions Remain High In Territories Jerusalem (JTA) — Six Pa- lestinians were shot dead over the weekend and dozens others wounded in bloody clashes with Israeli soldiers, as tensions remained high in e Gaza Strip during the ongoing crisis over Israel's deportation of Arab ac- tivists. Israeli soldiers killed three Palestinian gunmen who were about to ambush an rmy unit in the Gaza Strip and fatally shot three other Palestinians in separate stone-throwing clashes dur- ing the weekend. A seventh Palestinian was killed in the Gaza Strip, but it was unclear whether he was shot by troops or murdered by fellow Arabs on suspicion of collaboration with Israeli authorities. Foreign Minister Shimon Peres told reporters that both the government and the army "were checking them- selves following the growing number of fatalities in the territories." Elsewhere in the ter- ritories, security forces ar- rested two men in the West Bank village of Silat al- Khartiya who are suspected of having murdered a Jewish farmer in northern Israel four months ago. They are also suspected of the attemp- ted murder of y- - et another farmer. The widespread riots which broke out in the Gaza Strip were apparently trig- gered by Israel's publication of the names of 101 deportees it was willing to accept back in the country. The named deportees are among the 415 Palestinians temporarily expelled by Israel last December for be- ing active in the Islamic fundamentalist movement. Palestinians have thus far rejected Israel's compromise offer to partially reverse the deportations. In the clash with armed Palestinians, Israeli soldiers spotted a white car near the Nuseirat refugee camp in the Gaza Strip approaching with rifles sticking out of the windows. The soldiers, who were preparing to place a roadblock near the refugee camp, fired on the gunmen first, killing one of the men instantly and fatally woun- ding two others. Soldiers captured two other Palestinians in the car a unharmed, and handed them to Israel's domestic intel- ligence agency, the Shin Bet, for interrogation. Two Karl Gustav rifles, one Kalachnikov rifle, and plenty of ammunition were found in the car. Following the incident, the army clamped a curfew on Nuseirat and two other refugee camps in the neigh- borhood. Fierce riots broke out after rumors spread in the camps that the three gunmen were killed while in custody, rather than during the clash. The riots began near the homes of the killed gunmen at the Jebaliya refugee camp, with hundreds of local residents throwing stones and bricks at soldiers. The rioters threatened to storm the military outpost in the heart of the camp. Soldiers then fired at the crowd, killing one youth. A second youth was shot to death at the Bureij refugee camp nearby. A 21-year-old Palestinian was killed in the Rafah refu- gee camp, but it was unclear whether he was killed by Israeli troops or by other Arabs. The most recent death in the territories took place when Israeli security forces shot a 16-year-old boy during a clash with stone throwers in the east Jerusalem refu- gee camp of Shuafat. In another stone-throwing battle; soldiers shot and se- riously wounded a 17-year- old youth in the West Bank city of Nablus.
