"I got the (military)
regulations from September
1983, which to the best of my
knowledge have not been
changed to this day, and it
was written there plainly:
7-- homosexual soldiers will be
j drafted into the army, but
)- will not serve in certain
units, and will not have
access to classified mate-
rial," Prof. Even recounted.
"They will not advance
beyond a certain rank, and
in all cases will be treated by
a mental health officer and
be watched for the duration
of their service."
Military sources contend
that openly homosexual
\_ face no discrimina-
tion — they can serve in any
unit, and a number have ad-
vanced high in rank, with at
least one retiring as a
colonel.
Once declaring themselves
\_ gay, however, soldiers
automatically undergo
I psychological evaluations
"because there are certain
questions that have to be
asked regarding their ability
to adjust to army service,"
\ according to military
/-= sources.
If no psychological prob-
lems show up, there are no
obstacles to their advance-
ment, the sources maintain.
But closeted homosexuals
are a different matter alto-
gether. A soldier whom the
army discovers to be
homosexual will not be
discharged from the service,
but he will be kept out of
units with access to secret
information because "that
person would leave himself
open to blackmail," military
sources continue. ❑

"I was angry," he said.
`D"After I came out of the
closet, the argument about
blackmail no longer applied
to me. I had a high enough
position so that my case
came before a forum that in-
cluded the head of the Shin
Bet and a high army Intel-
' ligence official. They told me
[I'm] a security risk.

Knesset hearing, held by
Dayan's newly-formed Sub-
comittee on the Status of
Gays and Lesbians, was the
first time homosexuals had
showed up publicly, in force,
;to make their claim for
equality.
) By far the strongest appeal
came from Prof. Uzi Even,
head of Tel Aviv Univer-
sity's chemistry department,
who told how the army and
\_Shin Bet had kicked him out
of his army reserve position
as a top-ranked researcher
in defense-related matters,
after he began living openly
as a homosexual.
