vide employment for disad-
vantaged women who had
never held jobs outside the
home. We had to assure them
flexible hours, a convenient
location and some form of
payment. Our only prere-
quisite was an ability to sew.
Nili taught them to em-
broider."
Menaham, with all his
paternal enthusiasm for the
project, is frustrated by the ef-
fects the intifada has had on
sales. "At one time we had 30
women working and now
were down to 20. Iburists just
aren't coming like they used
to. I recently held exhibitions
in various American cities
and we did get some orders,
but not enough to keep us
self-sufficient!'
Nili was once a teacher. "I
had studied Eastern em-
broidery and working with
immigrants from the East, I
was attracted to a certain
spirit in their folklore and
handicrafts. It's ironic that an
Ashkenazi like me had to
teach Sephardi women to em-
broider, but many of them
came to Israel as children and
were never taught by their
mothers. We are trying to
help them rediscover their
cultural heritage. We use
authentic motifs and stitches,
but not always in the tradi-
tional manner!' She takes
down a multi-colored Kurdish
cap and points out its
flowered wheel design which
she has incorporated into a
wall-hanging, along with a
cat motif discovered in an an-
cient Kurdish manuscript.
"A Persian hat has seven
teardrop or almond motifs
around the crown," she shows
me. "This is the seed symbol
— the tree of life — and we
have chosen it as Kuzari's
emblem. The number of times
a motif appears in the article
is significant and intensifies
its power. This is especially
true of the sacred number
seven. In order to distinguish
themselves from the
Moslems, see how the Jews
embroidered seven teardrops,
rather than the usual six or
eight?'
Menahem picks up a red
cap, embroidered with green
and yellow. "Red represents
hell, green, the Garden of
Eden and yellow, light or
godliness," he says. "One had
to wear colors representing
both evil and good in order to
receive protection!'
"Embroidery was once a
matter of pride?' says Nili.
In Jerusalem's Kuzari
Workshop, scraps of various
traditions are being reworked
in to an art form called
"Israeli embroidery?' The
results are to be treasured. ❑
