ward to but continued pain
and loss of dignity."
To Rabbi Elimelech Gold-
berg of Congregation Young
Israel of Southfield, Mrs.
Goldbaum's dire situation did
not warrant a right to commit
suicide under Jewish law.
We're dealing with a great
deal of emotional pain and the
inability to cope," he said. "To
cope, one must realize that
there's a purpose to live. I
think the availability of
Kevorkian is robbing a lot of
people out of very positive life
experiences, not merely re-
moving pain and suffering."
Dr. Kevorkian countered

that a ban on assisted suiciCf:
would prove fruitless.
"Every case is unique," 1 e
said. "That's why you cant
legislate this and every at-
tempt to legislate is foolish. '
A temporary ban on assist -
ed suicide is scheduled to g:
into effect March 30. Mr.
Schwartz said his firm wi ! . I
continue to represent Di .
Kevorkian.

"If he's charged with L ,
crime, we will defend him ...
He's certainly not going tc
allow the zealots to chase hip:
out of Michigan," Mr
Schwartz said. CI

Conant Elementary
School in Bloomfield
Township became
the scene of a multicultur-
al gala last week when
about 65 people gathered
for Arabic and Jewish folk
dancing.
The dance was hosted
by the American Arabic
and Jewish Friends, a 10-
year-old group promoting
better understanding
between Arabic and
Jewish communities in
metropolitan Detroit.
The Friends host a myr-
iad of lectures and discus-
sions, but last Sunday
participants congregated
for fun. Dance instructors
Shelley Komer Jackier
and. Amalia Kado Younan
taught steps to the high-
spirited folk dances.
Young and old attended.

When they wearied of
dancing, participants
dined on Middle Eastern
food catered by Lebanon -

Geoffrey Orley, an exec-
utive committee member
representing the Jewish
community, said the event
was a demonstration of
unity between Arabic and
Jewish Americans.
