East," Mr. Tauber says.
When Mr. Tauber and a
group of businesspeople pur-
chased Reed Plastics in 1989,
someone suggested manufac-
turing products for the Mid-
dle East. He says his eyes lit
up. Israel was his suggestion.
"I checked around, and I
had some trouble getting good
leads," he recalls. "But I kept
researching, and eventually,
I found people in the plastic
business. I fell in love with a
kibbutz that had a plastic bot-
tle plant.
"We now supply them the
equipment, and they manu-
facture the product," Mr.
Tauber says, adding they tied
into a water company, Eden
Springs, two years ago.
"All parties have been
very cooperative," Mr. Tauber
says. "Government red tape
was non-existent. You just
have to do a lot of the work
yourself. You must do home-
work. You need a good lawyer
or an accountant who is from
Israel.
"If you leave the work to
someone else, it will become
a problem," he suggests. "This
is good for us. Israel has good
technology, bright people,
good productivity, and it helps
us to cover a whole other part
of the world. Like anything
else, this is for profit. You
don't go into business because
of philanthropy. That doesn't
work.
"But if you are interested
in philanthropy, I can help
you with that, too," he says. ❑
