education. Afterward, she
could not find a job that paid
more than minimum wage, so
she went home to Michigan
and joined a friend's business.
"It was time for a change
anyway," she said.
Recently, the business
closed down, and now Judith
is seeking employment once
again. Even though she is not
burned out on one particular
job, Judith says she is burned
out with the search.
Judith, 44, is also sick of
school and does not plan to re-
enroll for another degree.

"I feel that there was a
promise that when you get an
education, you'll be able to get
a job. But an education hasn't
meant a job at all," she said.
"I'm not really sure which
way to go, and maybe that's
where the burn-out comes
from. I'm not willing to climb
mountains anymore when
they end up being more of a
mirage."
Barbara Ellman, a career
management professional
who runs Ellman and Associ-
ates in West Bloomfield, has
helped Judith and many oth-
ers in their attempt to over-
come burn-out. Mrs. Ellman
believes that burn-out most
often occurs when people are
using skills that aren't nat-
ural for them.
"They're climbing uphill
everyday," Mrs. Ellman said.
"I think the burn-out issue
has to do with not working in
the right environment or not
doing tasks that help you
grow and develop."
The Myers-Briggs Type In-
dicator is a tool Mrs. Ellman
uses to determine the dispo-
sitions of her clients. Based
on the philosophy of psychol-
ogist Carl Jung, the Indicator
also helps job seekers under-
stand what types of work will
suit them best.

Self-insight helps people
avoid burn-out by steering
them in the right direction,
says Mrs. Ellman.
Larry Littman should
know.
Though he now runs his
own employment agency in
Troy, Littman Associates, Mr.
Littman began life in the
working world as a data
processor at the Detroit Free
Press.
"I assumed I'd use data pro-
cessing as the entree into
higher management," he said.
But it didn't happen. Mr.
Littman became less and less
satisfied with his job. He was
approaching age 40 and de-
cided he wanted to make a
drastic career change before
it was too late.
So he sought assistance
from a recruiting agency. In-
stead of placing Mr. Littman
with another firm, the re-
cruiting agency hired him.
Now Mr. Littman, who jok-
ingly calls himself a head-
hunter, sometimes lends
advice to people encountering
the same imbroglios. People
who feel burned out should
confront the situation, he rec-
ommends.
"Everybody in every posi-
tion will get burned out some-
time," he said.
But if burn-out persists,
one should look elsewhere for
a job. Like Mrs. Ellman, Mr.
Littman emphasizes the im-
portance of defining one's in-
terests and abilities. If an
individual lacks self insight,
he or she should get input
from friends by asking them:
What do you think I'm good
at? Where do I fall short on
the job?
"It can be hard. It can be
painful sometimes," Mr.
Littman said.
But, he said, it can be vital
to rekindling on-the-job
fires. 0

Israel And France
Sign Agreement

Paris (JTA) — Israel and
France will set up an $18.5
million fund for industrial co-
operation in 1993, according
to an agreement signed re-
cently between the two coun-
tries.
Israeli Minister of Industry
Micha Harish signed the ac-
cord in Paris, along with his
French counterpart Do-
minique Strauss- Kahn.
Each partner will put up
half the money for the fund,
which will be devoted to high-
tech development.
"This is the first real effort
to upgrade our economic re-

lations in decades," said Mr.
Strauss-Kahn, who explained
that the aim was to double
the trade between France and
Israel within five years.
Various projects involving
Franco-Israeli cooperation are
being discussed, including a
railway linking Tel Aviv to
Eilat.
Mr. Harish invited French
industrialists to work more
with Israel. He stressed that
they should not be afraid of
the Arab boycott of Israel.
"Cooperation with Israel is
useful for the peace process,"

Mr. Harish said.
