ANNOUNCING THE FIRST MAJOR ECONOMIC PROGRAM OF THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION. ci) Gallery Mounts New Exhibit The Sybaris Gallery will feature the ceramics of New York artist Jeff Perrone in a solo exhibition Feb. 12-March 13. Mr. Perrone's work is a mixture of invention, irony and intellect. It is also an ex- tension of his work as a teacher, art critic and painter. He has redefined the tradi- tional view of the vessel from a unified form to a structure that is nonfunctional and nonvolumetric. His intention to avoid any association with the wheel and closed or rounded forms has led him to use open, constructed shapes with a strong emphasis on surface and color. The shapes and glazes of Japanese Oribe ware and the patterns on Native American Mimbres pottery have been important in Mr. Perrone's development as an artist. Ideas derived from these wares, such as asymmetry, dramatic use of positive and negative space, inventive use of straight and curved line, and a strong emphasis on pic- torial surface have provided visual sources for his imagination. Mr. Perrone's current body of work consists of combina- tions of glazed tiles and pain- tings on canvas that mount directly on walls. Mr. Perrone employs sheets of clay much as one might pieces of paper, simply to provide support for his two-dimensional painter- ly elaborations. However, the clay sheets do have a sculptural life of their own — they are never perfectly flat or rectangular, but curl up off the walls. He combines non-Western sources such as Persian and Indian miniatures, Japanese kimonos and Mimbres pot- tery with Western images from floral dressprints of the 50s, wallpaper, linoleum, color field Painting and Matissian motifs for the pur- pose of translating them into "foreign" media. Sybaris Gallery is at 301 W. Fourth, Royal Oak. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. On 29 November 1947, the United Nations General Assembly approved a plan to partition Palestine, west of the Jordan River, into an Arab and a Jewish state. The Jews accepted the com- promise; the Arabs rejected it. On 14 May 1948, the State of Israel was declared and the neighboring Arab armies immediately invad- ed.
