that the president might have
done it a bit differently, might
have sensed and responded to
the manifestly deep feelings
people seem to have regard-
ing homosexuality. And there
are those who say that it was
disconcerting that the very
first controversy of the Clin-
ton presidency was on a sub-
ject that seems so peripheral
to most of us.
They can't both be right: If
the matter is peripheral, how
come it elicited such a power-
ful reaction across the coun-
try? Peripheral to the
economy, yes, more or less;
peripheral to the diverse
crises we face abroad, yes.
But not at all peripheral to
the 10 percent of the Ameri-
can people who are gay, nor,
one imagines, to their fathers
and mothers, their straight
siblings and friends.
Bluntly: There are rough-
ly four times as many gay and
lesbian people in the United

States as there are Jews. Sup-
pose that Jews were denied a\
fundamental status in thiC\
country: Would we be com-
forted by statements from our
leading legislators that
though they themselves have
nothing against us, we have
to be patient; we have to un-Th
derstand how difficult it
would be for others to learn to
accept us; we have to be sen-
sitive to the bigotry of the ma-
jority?
We may protest, but there;
are times when in the name
of elementary decency we are
required to war against the
child within us, to become
within ourselves a generation
younger, and then to insist
that it is the majority that
must make the difficult acIZ\
justment, not the minority
that must accept the contin-
uing insult. And perhaps we
will learn that the adjust-
ment, once we are committed
to it, is not all that difficult. CI

Montreal (JTA) — For the
third time in a month, van-
dals have struck at Mon-
treal's Jewish community,
with spray- painted
swastikas, slogans and, in
one instance, three BB
pellets shot through a
residential window.
This past weekend, van-
dals broadened their scope to
include not only synagogues
and private homes, but
school buses, as well.
Two school buses, which
had been parked at Mon-
treal's College Francais over
the weekend, were found
with swastikas and anti-
Semitic slogans such as "Die
fucking Jews" and "Nazi
Power" painted in red all
over them.
One of the buses belongs to
the French school, but the
other is contracted for use by
Toras Moshe elementary
school.
In the predominantly Jew-
ish area of Cote St. Luc, the
Sephardic Beit Rambam
synagogue was defaced with
red swastikas both on the
front entrance and in back.
But the assailants, two
men and a woman, were
surprised by a neighbor
whose house is directly
across from the synagogue.
Police and officials of local
Jewish organizations have
been investigating this
latest round of vandalism
and were withholding com-
ment.
The principal of Toras
Moshe, who asked that his
name not be used, said that
the attacks should be a war-
ning to the community.
While the younger
students at his school do not
understand the meaning of
the graffiti, he said, "it gives
them (the older students) a
warning to watch out. It's an
attack on all Jews, not just
students."
War Criminal
Is Found
Amsterdam (JTA) — A
former Dutch war criminal
who managed to escape from
prison in 1952 and flee to
Germany has been recently
located in the German city of
Hagen.
Herbert Bikker, 77, was
tracked down by Dutch Nazi-
hunter Jacques Kooistra,
and an interview with him
was broadcast on Dutch
television.
Mr. Bikker, who escaped
from prison during
Christmas 1952 with six
other inmates, worked as a
camp guard at the notorious
German concentration camp
Erica in eastern Holland
during the Nazi occupation.
