IT'S TIME TO START THINKING OF THOSE BEAUTIFUL KNIT VESTS FOR SPRING with smiles and an occa- sional high step. Lyrics are another matter, having to do with rumors circulating about deporta- tion. Then Ms. Golden, stan- ding alone, sings a ballad, "A suitcase speaks. - "I'm a little suitcase from Frankfurt an Main/looking for my owner/where could be be?/He wore a star/He was old and blind/But he treated me good/As if I were his child." She ends, nearly whisper- ing, "Ich bin ein kleiner troffer aus Frankfurt Am Main/Ich mochte zu meinem Herrn/Er ist so allein." (I'm a little suitcase from Frankfurt am Main/I want to be with my owner, he is so alone.") Suddenly, Mr. Waechter jumps onto the stage dressed in drag and in a duet, sings about a newly arrived, ap- parently wealthy woman, who asks where one can receive the best care, food and coffee. The song rings true. Many German Jews were sent to Terezin and were told by the Nazis they were actually go- ing to a spa town. "Therezienstadt, There- zienstadt, the most modern ghetto that the whole world has!" is the chorus. Mr. Waechter tells the au- dience of the International Red Cross visit in June, 1944 and how the Nazis prepared the camp. "The first thing they did was go through the camp and ship out 4,000 of the oldest and sickest people directly to the gas chambers. Then they rehearsed a group of children who would ap- pear in the film (made about camp life while the Red Cross was there) and fatten- ed them up," he says. Mr. Waechter, like a child staring up to an adult, beseechingly cries, "Oh no more chocolate, Herr Obersturmbahnfurher!" (Mr. high-ranking Nazi official). The Red Cross visit comes and goes, the propaganda film is made of children frolicking in playgrounds and old folks sitting in the Terezin coffee house — all of it genuine theater, Mr. Waechter notes. After the performance, he told me, "You see, many of us here know what we lost when we destroyed our Jew- ish community. And with their destruction, we destroyed culture in Vienna — this play shows that. Vienna has never recovered from the loss of its Jews. So it was suicide, nicht wahr(wasn't it)?" ❑ Knit, Knit, Knit 855-2114 AND Accents In Needlepoint LEHI A FIRE UNDER TOUR II.
