Tu B'Shevat — the New Year
of the Trees — marks the
awakening of spring in the
land of Israel. It is a holiday
which commands our atten-
tion now more than ever. Con-
cerned citizens of the world
recognize with increasing
alarm that the neglect and
abuse of the environment has
reached alarming propor-
tions. Planting trees, the cen-
tral act of the Tu B'Shevat
celebration, is a powerful
symbolic act which demon-
strates Israel's desire to
reverse the earth's destruc-
tion.
Trees improve the environ-
ment. They cool the at-
mosphere, help slow gobal
warming, and reduce noise
and air pollution. They help
create arable land; by grasp-
ing shifting sands, they halt
the destructive encroachment
of spreading desert wastes.
Trees improve the quality of
life of those fortunate enough
to enjoy wooded areas in and
near their neighborhoods and
towns. They are a source of
beauty and peace for resi-
dents of our hectic modern
society. Trees restore the
balance of nature, providing
habitats for wildlife and a
productive use of marginal
lands.
The Jewish National Fund,
the agency responsible for the
preservation, reclamation
and beautification of the land
of Israel, has been celebrating
Tu B'Shevat for decades, by
enabling thousands of Israel's
children to participate in this
act of redeeming their land.
The practice of planting trees
in Israel on Tu B'Shevat —
whether directly or through
the Jewish National Fund —
has become a cherished tradi-
tion of the Jewish people. The
200 million trees planted by
JNF in Israel represent the
love of Zion and the dedica-
tion to the dream of a reborn
Jewish nation. The act of set-
tling roots in the soil is both
a symbol of each Jew's per-
sonal connection with the
land of Israel, and a very ef-
fective means of insuring the
well-being of that land.
The implicit message of Tu
B'Shevat is one of hope; to
heal the planet is to an-
ticipate our children's in-
heriting a better world than
the one into which we were

born. Planting trees in Israel
on Tu B'Shevat aids that -
healing, not only for the sake
of the Israelis who are today
building their lives in the
Jewish state, but for the
generations to come.
In so doing, we fulfill the
trust that God has placed in ..4
us as trustees of this planet.
Planting trees is an expres-
sion of hope that God will con-
tinue to bless our world with
renewal as we fulfill the mitz-
vah of caring for His precious
gifts.

Pope Discusses -1
Pilgrimages
Tel Aviv (JTA) — In an un-
precedented move, Pope 1
John-Paul II has agreed to
meet with a delegation of El
Al representatives to discuss uA
Christian pilgrimages to
Israel.
The Vatican decision, re-
ported by the Israeli daily
Ma' ariv, reflects the growing
contact between Israel and
the Vatican and their grad-
ual progress toward better
relations.
Representatives of Israel's
national airline have
gathered in Rome to in-
vestigate ways of encourag-
ing higher levels of Chris-
tian pilgrimage to Israel.
Tourism to Israel is al-
ready at an all-time high for
Israel.
In 1992, 1,499,200 tourists
arrived in Israel, a 60 per-
cent increase over 1991 and
a 9 percent over the previous
record year of 1987, accor-
ding to figures published by
the newspaper Davar.
Last year, 23 percent of the
tourists came from the
United States, 11 percent
from Germany, and 10 per-
cent from both Britain and
from France, the reports
said.
Israel plans to increase its
attractiveness to tourists by
building a $2 million tourist-
health center on the grounds
of Kibbutz Be'eri with hot
water springs and mineral
spas.
An entertainment and lei-
sure center is planned to
cater to visitors seeking a
natural cure for various
ailments, or who wish mere-
ly to relax.
