HOME APPLIANCE MART INTRODUCES THE NEW & EXCLUSIVE...

Court Stays
Extradition

Tel Aviv (JTA) — An Ameri-
can Jewish couple wanted in
the United States in connec-
'-,on with a 1980 mail-
bombing have obtained a
last-minute stay of their
extradition from Israel.
The West Bank couple,
Robert and Rochelle Mann-
; ing, are accused of planning
\1 parcel-bomb explosion that
claimed the life of a secre-
tary in California.
Although a three-justice
panel of Israel's Supreme
Court approved the Mann-
ings' extradition, the court's
president, Meir Shamgar,
has agreed to hold a further
\ hearing at the request of the
couple's lawyer.
The parcel bomb responsi-
ble for the 1980 killing was
I , addressed to the wife of the
,
secretary's employer, and
the Mannings' fingerprints
were later found on parts of
/-the wrappings.
At the time, the couple
were active in the Jewish
Defense League. Soon after-
; ward, they immigrated to
Israel.
Rochelle Manning stood
,.-_zial for the crime in the
\ United States in 1989, but a
dung jury resulted in the
case.
The current proceedings in
1\ Israel come after a request
' from the United States to
, 3xtradite the couple.
Mr. Shamgar said he
% postponed the extradition,
which was authorized by the
Supreme Court on Jan. 18,
in order to hold another
hearing due to the "difficult
_legal questions and prin-
ciples (the case) raises."
> The Mannings' lawyer
1 argued that the three
justices, despite unanimous-
ly approving extradition,
) expressed important differ-
ences of opinion, particular-
ly regarding whether the
7- Mannings could be tried
twice for the same offense.
There was a dispute as to
whether the "double jeopar-
dy" issue should be decided
,_in Israeli courts or in
/— America.
No date has yet been set
1 for the new hearing ordered
by Mr. Shamgar.

While six million European

most people turned their
heads. But a small majority
risked their lives to hide
Jews and help them escape.
Over 3,000 of these
