brew Free Loan of
Metropolitan Det-
roit is sponsoring a poster
contest open to local Jew-
ish youth under age 13.
The contest aims to edu-
cate people about Hebrew
Free Loan and promote its
motto: Helping people to
help themselves.
Hebrew Free Loan is a
97-year-old nonprofit
agency serving Jews in
Greater Detroit. It gives
interest-free loans to
employed Jews who can-
not secure funding from
other sources. Many of
these loans help people
pay for cars, rent, wed-
ding ceremonies and other
simchas.
Affiliated with the
Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, HFL
receives money from the
Allied Jewish Campaign
and private donations.
Ruth Marcus, executive
director, said the poster
contest is a method of
demonstrating how HFL
assists the Jewish commu-
nity.
"We want kids to under-
stand that the mitzvot we
have the responsibility to
perform do not exist in a
vacuum," she said. "Every-
day, people in our commu-
nity need help." The
posters, said Mrs. Marcus,
should depict HFL and
mitzvot: People helping
others to help themselves.
"They can be as elabo-
rate or as simple as the
child's imagination and
ability will allow," she
said.
There are no specific
size requirements for the
posters. Children can
draw, paint, or sketch in
color or black and white.
Entries will be divided
into groups and judged
according to the artists'
ages. Each winner will
receive an HFL T-shirt.
HFL has encouraged
religious school teachers
to assign the posters as
Purim projects. Mrs.
Marcus said teachers can
incorporate lessons about
HFL into lessons about
mitzvot the megillah
describes.
"We want to link the
concept of tzedakah with

the mitzvot of Purim," she
said.
Posters must arrive at
the HFL office no later
than Feb. 21. Judging will
4
take place Feb. 23.
Entries should be
marked with the child's'
name, age and phone
number. Teachers may
send their students',
posters in one package
marked with the grade-
and school.
The address of the HFL-
office is 21550 West 12
Mile Road, Southfield, MI
48076. For more informa-
tion, call HFL, 356-5292. ❑
