Fill Your Cookie Jar
With Edible Treats

an a cookie be a mon-
ster? Yes, but good
enough to eat! Shap-
ing cookie dough is an
enjoyable project fcf children
with an edible reward. Teddy
bears, birds, flowers, alphabet
letters and, yes, even
monsters are on the endless
list of cookie-cutters.
Another creative form of
cookie shaping is found in
your child's imagination. The
very young can roll small
balls or long worm-like
shapes, while connecting the
long worms to make letters
and numbers can be mastered
by the pre-school crowd.
A cookie press can offer pro-
fessional looking results with
less mess. Place dough in bar-
rel unit, affix different
decorative plates and push
down on the cookie sheet. The
"drop cookie," can teach size
and measurement. A tea-
spoonful of cookie dough ver-
sus a tablespoonful will pro-
duce the smaller cookie.
For cookies in a rush, use
prepared cookie dough from
the supermarket refrigerated
section. It appears in long
plastic-covered cylinders and
can be flavored with chocolate
chips, peanut butter or basic
sugar. After these cookies are
shaped, baked and cooled, dif-
ferent toppings can be ap-
plied. Confectioners' sugar
mixed with butter to frost an
already sweet cookie is
overkill. Try topping your
next batch with peanut but-
ter, apple butter, all-fruit jelly,
or low-fat cream cheese (keep
refrigerated). These act as a
glue-type base for raisins,
sunflower seeds, popcorn and
cereal decorations.
Follow the Cookie Credo be-
low and a good time is as-
sured: Expect the kitchen and
the children to get soiled, and
don't expect perfectly shaped
results.

DROP COOKIES

40 cookies if you drop by table-
spoonful and about 100 cookies
if you drop by teaspoonful.

• 1 cup bran cereal (Grape
Nuts, Bran Buds, etc.)
• 1 cup flour
• 2/3 cup dried apricots,
chopped
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon baking
powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• '/2 cup butter/margarine,
softened
• 1/2 cup dark brown sugar

cup granulated sugar
• 1 extra-large egg
• 1 tablespoon milk
• 1 tablespoon vanilla
Combine bran, flour, apri-
cots, baking soda, baking
powder and salt in a large
mixing bowl. In a medium
mixing bowl cream butter,
brown sugar and white sugar.
Add egg, milk and vanilla.
Mix well. Combine both
bowls, blending until they are
evenly mixed. Grease 2 cookie
sheets and drop batter by
tablespoons leaving 2 inches
between cookies. These cook-
ies will spread. Bake for 10 to
12 minutes or until they are
a light golden color. Cool on
wire rack.

ENERGY CHEWS

These cookies are not baked and
are easy enough for a toddler to
make.

• 1 cup smooth peanut
butter (no sugar added)
• 1/2 cup raisins
• 1/2 cup grated apple (with
skin)
• 1/2 cup chopped nuts or
seeds
• 1 cup rolled oats
• 1/4 cup honey (optional —
creates a stickier
substance)
Mix all ingredients to-
gether in a medium size bowl.
Rub butter or margarine on
hands. Scoop up a small
amount and roll into a small
ball shape. Scoop up a larger
amount and shape into a
larger ball shape. Place on
waxed paper or wrap indi-
vidually in colorful plastic
wrap and refrigerate.
