uring its exalted
glory-days existence,
the famed London
Chop House had many
employees whose names were
synonymous with personable
quality as would rightly befit
this one time nationally-
known Detroit restaurant
institution.
To the Archives of
American Art members, one
of the servers, George Seille,
was best known . . . He was
there back in 1961 when this
fine group held its first Lun-
di Gras benefit at the Chop
and every year until owner
Les Gruber passed on . . .
then annually at various
places.
This year, Archives of
American Art holds number
33, Feb. 22, 7 p.m., at its new
home . . . Excalibur on
Franklin Road and 12 Mile off
Northwestern Hwy. ... . whose
reputation has grown as be-
ing the "London Chop House
of the Northwest."
And what could be more ap-
propriate than that of the
same George Seille working
Tuesday through Thursday
evenings at the "Ex"? . . . He
will most certainly also work
the coming Lundi Gras, even
if it is being held on a
Monday.
George was one of the
waitpersons at the recent pre-
tasting where many AAA
members were so delighted to
see him . . . still _graciously
adept as one of the best in the
business . . . He started back
in 1958 at London East, own-
ed by Les and Sam Gruber
and Joe Wolfe . . . came to
downtown Detroit's London
Chop House in 1959 and was
there until it closed, June of
1991.
The culinary finery served
by George and others was a
sampling of what guests will
expect at the Feb. 22 biggie
: . . Passed hors d'oeuvres
were plentiful and im-
aginative as was the menu
prepared by Excalibur Ex-
ecutive Chef Patrick Dunn,
who explained the dishes to
about 15 in attendance at the
mid-afternoon presentation.
Dr. Irving and Doris Bur-
ton, Marilyn and Bud
Schlain, Dave Leader, Mari-
lyn and Dr. Robert Silver
among those who gave their
hearty approval to Patrick's
offerings and the wine
mastery explanation of Ex-

calibur General Manager Vic-
tor Dazbaz . . . Marilyn and
Dr. Robert Silver will co-chair
the Feb. 22 event with Dottie
and Richard Doerer.
The Archives of American
Art was founded in Detroit in
1954, extended to six centers
across the country, and by
1971 became a division of the
Smithsonian Institutions .. .
That first Lundi Gras at the
London Chop House in 1961
was inspired by the Mardi
Gras celebration of Detroit's
original French settlers . . . It
currently has over 12 million
documents and 3,000 oral
histories and interviews, with
note as being the largest
source of material in the
world on the history of the
visual arts in America .. .
From colonial times to now it
has papers of painters,
sculptors, crafts artists, collec-
tors and dealers, plus those of
historians, curators, critics,
museums, societies and
institutions.
Proceeds from the annual
Lundi Gras help to support
the Midwest Regional Center
at Detroit Institute of Arts,
which houses the archives for
loan availability for around
the world and is open to
researchers by appointment.
The 33rd annual Lundi
Gras will combine fine dining,
dancing and entertainment
for what has always been a
choice evening . . . Jeanne
Penny at the Detroit offices of
the Archives of American Art
has more info, 226-7544.,
The presence of George
Seille sort of makes it com-
plete . . . that reputation
given to Excalibur as the nor-
thwest version of the London
Chop House.
CONGRATS . . . to Kathy
Hack . . . on her 27th
birthday.
THEY WERE serious, but
you knew everyone was hav-
ing fun . . . This is really what
it's all about for the Vintage
Players of the Oak Park
Senior Center.
The amateur cast of 65
80-plus-year-olds who'll pre-
sent "Meet Me In Miami"
Feb. 14, 3 p.m., at Congrega-
tion Beth Achim on 12 Mile
between Evergreen and
Lahser, were having their
first rehearsal on the Beth
Achim stage and enjoying
every minute as they went
through the process of
musical comedy in the play

with a Yiddish flavor.
The seniors want to estab-
lish a program for the elderly
with diminished abilities who
can participate in music, ex-
ercise, current events, arts
and crafts and socializing at
the Oak Park Community
Center.
This alone is worth the $5
admission that should pack
Beth Achim to its rafters.
"Meet Me In Miami" was
written by Fran Aaron and
Jackie Klein while sunning
on Delray Beach in Florida
last winter . . . Fran is show
director and a former teacher
of the developmentally disabl-
ed . . . Jackie worked for the
Southfield Eccentric 20 years
and does freelance writing
plus having a weekly column
at the Eccentric.
The musical comedy is an
all-out effort by these
energetic seniors, whose fun
is sure to spill out onto their
audience Feb. 14.

role of Fanni, shopped for and

sewed lame vests with se-
quins, plus also trimming
hats with baubles, buttons
and bows . . . Joe Kaufman, in
the role of director at the
"Coconut Grove Senior Para-
dise," not only sings and-
dances but was responsible
for getting spotlights and
transporting them to Beth
Achim . . . Yona Friedman, a
sexy nurse in the show, is also
a makeup artist . . . Joe Katz-
man, a seasoned Vintage
Players performer, also uses
his creative talents to write
poetry.
Showfolks Ceci and Jack
Kaufman, Joe Katzman, Yona
Friedman and Gert Cohen,
most admirably maneuver
through snow, rain and sleet
to deliver meals on wheels to
shut-ins . . . Former orchestra
leader and violinist Hy Pritz
is a popular pantomimist who
entertains gratis for nurisng
homes and senior citizens .. .
Alex Nemoff owns a couple of
horses which he likes to ride,
and also sings for various
events . . . Irene Pianin is a
trained soprano who has per-
formed with the Oak Park
Civic Chorus and appeared in
