and members of its board of directors, led by President
James A. Safran.
Safran, a long time member of the Chapter, and a local
and national officer of the American Technion Society, is
currently CEO of Safran Printing Co. and of Microforms,
Inc. He is a board member of International Business
Forms Industries.
Safran, pictured at left, has been deeply involved with
Jewish communal life. He is currently a member of the board of directors of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, leading a number of its committees. He is past
president of the American/Israel Chamber of Commerce, of the
American/Israel Education Institute, as well as of the Young Adult Division of
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. He has also been a recipient of
the Federation's Boesky Young Leadership Award.
Jim is a graduate of the University of Michigan. He and his wife Diane have
three children - Hy, Alana and Jacob.
"This year's nominating process," commented Committee Chairman
Lawrence Jackier, "provided the opportunity to elect individuals that will
provide dynamic leadership for the Detroit Chapter." Joining Safran on the
Chapter's Executive Committee are officers: Lawrence A. Berry, James
Deutchman, Karen Egren, Mark Kahn, Marjorie Kurzman, Roman Lundin and
Morris Rochlin.
Referring to the goals for his two year term, Safran noted that "aside from
our primary objective of raising funds for this marvelous institution of higher
learning, our chapter will focus on expanding the membership base of our
supporters. Through a variety of educational and entertaining programs, we
will continually emphasize our firm belief that the future of Israel's security
and economic independence is based on high technology, and that high
technology in Israel is at the Technion."

Russian Engineers and
Scientists Project

The Detroit ATS Chapter is continuing to assist newly arrived engineers
and scientists from the former Soviet Union. A large number of these
highly qualified and talented New Jewish Americans now reside in the
Detroit area. They are in need of assistance with regard to job placement,
networking in the scientific community and familiarity with their areas of
discipline in the U.S.
Led by board members, Michael Egren, Salman Grand and Roman
Lundin, the Chapter has begun efforts to review and circulate resumes.
Detroit Chapter board members, as well as a number of former
immigrants who have successfully resettled in the Detroit area, have
consulted with the Resettlement Service and the Jewish Vocational
Service to implement a program that will serve this talented and
potentially productive population.
Together with Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, the Chapter is
developing an incubator that will serve the most highly qualified scientists
among the recent arrivals.
Individuals, particularly those with expertise in engineering and scientific
fields, who would like to participate in this project should contact Isaac
