One clarification relating to my having said "...ideologi- cally, we're not saying you have to believe anything" (in regard to intermarried cou- ples feeling comfortable at the Birmingham Temple). I was referring to religious belief or doctrine. Humanistic Judaism is founded on a definite positive philosophy of life which is based on reason rather than faith. We have definite beliefs: we are proud to identify with the history and culture of the Jewish people, we solve prob- lems by relying on ourselves and other people, indepen- dent of supernatural inter- vention, and we find truth by looking at evidence. In our school of Jewish cul- ture, we emphasize values such as rationality, courage, competence, creativity, gen- erosity, honesty, trust, hope, human rights for all, and re- sponsibility toward other peo- ple. So, we do have beliefs which guide us in making eth- ical decisions. While the depth of deprivation is nowhere near the Holocaust, one cannot escape from cer- tain similarities that the cur- rent "ethnic cleansing" has to the events of Nazi Germany. Most unfortunately, there are many lessons to be learned: 1) "Never Again" will hap- pen again. And again. And again. 2) The world leadership will fall short, dismally short of taking 'effective action to stop the atrocities. 3) One country acted. While it could not stop the atrocities, it could and did pull it's brethren out of the country, quickly, efficiently and with- out fanfare. Israel. How many would have been saved from the Holo caust if there was an Israel? What we should never, eve forget is the mission of Israel — to be a safe harbor for Jews all over the world. Today, as the Allied Jewish Campaign unfolds, it is o own, very self-interest to give as if our future depended upon Israel's continued suc- cess. It does. Philip L. Elkus Bloomfield Hills The HarVest Of The Nazis They said it would never hap- pen again! However, accord- ing to the prediction made by Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda secretary before his death in 1945, "Now our Nazi party ideas are con- demned, but in the future you will harvest from the seeds that were planted." Are these "seeds" the con= sequences of what is happen- ing in Germany today? The - German people are once more standing by passively! Is this the characterization of nor- mal human behavior? Nathan Garfinkel Southfield Nazi's Appeal Is Dismissed Amsterdam (JTA) — A Dut- ch court this week dismissed an appeal by Nazi col- laborator Jacob Luitjens, who was extradited from Canada last month, ruling he must serve out a 1948 sentence of life imprison- ment. Mr. Luitjens, 73, a retired botany instructor, was jaile in November on his return from Canada after waging a four-year battle against deportation. Canadian courts found he had lied about his wartime past on entering the country 1961. Mr. Luitjens may appeal the Dutch lower court rul- ing. His brother has already submitted a request for .mer- cy to the Dutch crown. Mr. Luitjens had sought a retrial in the Netherlands on the grounds he was not pre- sent at the original hearing where he was convicted in absentia for helping the oc- cupying German forces - cap- ture Dutch resistance fighters during World War
