looking the ocean, the deck of a sailboat, a
country garden, or any other unusual setdng.
And theme weddings, which are gaining
popularity for second-time celebrations, usu-
ally require something unique. If the setting
is country western, you don't want to show
up in a pretty little silk dress or a conservative
business suit. Don't worry, though. A bride
who wants guests to wear something differ-
ent will usually say so on the invitation.
As to the black-or-white issue for women
guests, the jury is still out. Women seem to
have latched on to the "little black dress" as
appropriate for weddings. Even Letitia
Baldridge supports the black dress for a late
afternoon wedding, although she still frowns
on wearing the color to a morning wedding.
But etiquette columnist Judith Martin, in her
book Miss Manners' Guide for the Turn-of-the-
Millennium, writes, "In this society, black sym-
bolizes death. Although formal mourning is
seldom worn except at funerals, and black
has become disassociated with mourning...,
people are still shocked to see it at weddings,
because it gives them tragic associations."
On the other side, she also nixes white for
guests, as does Baldridge. Both women agree
that a guest in white seems to be competing
for attention that should be focused only on
the bride. But not every fashion expert agrees.
"I think a white outfit is totally appropriate
to wear to a wedding, especially a summer
wedding," says Nancy Sachs of Saks Fifth Av-
enue. "But you have to be careful," she adds.
"You don't want to look in any way like a
bride."
