Several years lat- er, an Englishwoman, remembering the Dutch girl's situation, gathered a group of fiends to bring small gills to an impoverished bride. Thus, legend tells us, bridal showers began centuries ago. But this is the 90s. Showers are no longer only for the bride. Nor are the gifts relegated to housekeeping. In this age of equality, it's commonplace to shower the bridal couple with gifts to please them both. Write a dif- ferent hour of the day or night on each invitation and request the guests bring a gift appropriate for that hour. For example, for 9 a.m. they might choose a breakfast tray, bath towels or His and Her robes; for noon, a pic- nic basket or tickets to a matinee; for 6 p.m., a pretty table cloth, ice bucket with a bottle of champagne or candle sticks and candles. Dec orate the table with a collection of clocks, hour glasses, favored time pieces, hearts, flowers, lace, beads or fruit. Or, glamorize tree branch- es, leaves and berries by spraying them with gold spray paint Begin the evening with Constant Com- ment Champagne Punch, a fabulous com- bination of orange and spice tea, a splash of orange liqueur and bubbling champagne. A tea-flavored ice mold brimming with fresh fruit looks terrific and ensures the punch is never diluted. The star of the buffet is a meat-pasta entree, Veal and Orzo in a Garlic Crumb Crust, which is assembled, (even frozen), baked and served in the same dish.
