Inn at Langley, on faraway Whidbey Island
in Puget Sound, overlooks Saratoga Passage,
the channel that runs between the island and
the coast of Washington. The stylishly de-
signed hostelry, part Frank Lloyd Wight and
part Pacific Rim, is a three-story concrete-and-
wood structure that hangs off a bluff and de-
scends to the beach below. Each of the
twenty-four guest rooms, mostly wood and
glass Asian-style affairs, is quite spacious (the
smallest is 450 square feet; the suite is 700).
Oversized whirlbaths are found in every
room. Guests open the blinds onto a view of
the spectacular Cascade Mountains. Just be-
low, whales frequent the Saratoga Passage.
Rooms are supplied with plump, goose-down
comforters, and each has its own private, cov-
ered patio.
Summers are busy here, so it's best to vis-
it the Inn at Langley in other seasons. Yes,
it rains often in these parts, but never mind.
You can nest by the fire with a hot cup of that
famed, Seattle-style cappuccino or "caffe lat-
te.
The inn's dining room is open on Friday
and Saturday nights year-round, as well as
Sunday and Monday evenings in summer.
Locals have learned to book eight weeks in
advance. The dining room features a huge
fireplace, an abundance of tables for two, and
a convivial "great table" that seats ten. Din-
ner starts promptly at seven with a glass of
sherry and an optional tour of the wine cel-
lar
The food is quintessential Northwest:
salmon from the Columbia River, locally gath-
ered mussels in a black-bean sauce, breast of
duck with loganberry sauce, island-grown
strawberries and cream. Its all seasoned with
fresh herbs straight out of the oriental-in-
spired herb-and-flower garden. Jacket and tie
are preferred, but, as one Langley afficiona-
do notes, "the northwest does celebrate
sweaters."
In 1985, the Supreme Court, by a 9-0 vote,
declared that Long Island, N.Y. was really a
peninsula and still attached to the mainland.
With that, Whidbey Island, 45-miles long, be-
came the longest island in the lower Forty-
Eight. The quaint village of Langley, which
