the formal mishebayrach that she chants. "It
is supportive and makes them feel welcome
as a Jewish household," she says. "And, these
days, another Jewish household is really cause
for excitement"
One old Ufruf custom that persists re-
gardless of philosophical or halachic differ-
ences— showering the groom (or couple)
with candy, small fruits, or nuts. The sweets
and nuts are packaged in small soft bags, and
the children in the congregation are invited
to gather them at the end of the service. For
the couple, the shower of good things sym-
bolizes the congregation's hope for the mar-
riage— that it be fertile and filled with
