bridal party themes continue in popularity.
But what's generating new interest is unusu-

shawl collar jackets are inching into every av-
enue of formal wear— from old Hollywood-
style white dinner jackets to the latest formal
tail coats new from Pierre Cardin— and it's all
showing up on the groom and his ushers. For
dashing daytime formal dress, grooms can
turn to Lord West's updated Renaissance look
with black cutaway coat, wing-collar shirt,
striped trousers, vest, and paisley patterned
cravat. Novelty accessories continue to spice
up a basic black tux for the less traditional
male. Metallics, stripes, dots and florals en-
hance ties and cummerbunds with the new
stand-up collar shirt. Black-grounded multi-
color print vests and accessories are a new
look for groomsmen. Ushers can pass on the
boutonniere in favor of a pocket square in clas-
sic white or in a color that complements the
maids' dresses.
Mothers of the bride and groom "don't
want to look typical," says Nancy Sachs, of
Saks Fifth Avenue, and are moving away from
matronly pastel frocks toward more sophisti-
cated, youthful styles. New for daytime wed-
dings are printed taffeta dresses topped with
matching print chiffon coats. For after-sun-
down-style, retailers are stocking beaded
bodices with ball gown skirts or long pleated
columns that skim the body and flatter fuller
frames.

cumbed to the latest economic climate with
manufacturers offering an array of choices
at lower prices. "1993 brides have lucked out
— we haven't seen so much value and crafts-
manship for such reasonable prices in quite a
while," says Elegant Bride's Barrett-Hirschaut.
Even so, with retail gowns averaging $800, the
smart bride is shopping around and weighing
other options. Whether she chooses to rent
her gown, order through a catalogue, or stitch
